Ross has me to rights:
The very media elite that Gingrich delights in hammering has actually been in his corner all along. The press likes a horse race; the press likes outsize personalities; the press favors an underdog; and the press even takes a strange sort of delight in being ruthlessly attacked.
We can't quit Newt, 'tis true. And Palin-withdrawal can give any hack the delirium tremens.
But I think it's also the brain-numbing, spine-deadening prospect of facing Romney alone for months on end that is also at play. It already feels in the campaign what it must have felt like when Romney forced those retirees in Florida to listen to a third verse of his rendition of "America The Beautiful."
