Tom Ricks believes doing so would make going to war harder. Ackerman disagrees:

Korea was the Iraq/Afghanistan of its day: a war conducted without the support of the American public, and largely out of its sight. One of the ways the military managed to do that was to keep a tremendous amount of draftees out of Korea, placing them either in stateside assignments or sending them to Germany.
