The NYT And Torture: A Breakthrough

I do not mean the current, alternating headlines in the online and print editions, where the t-word is now popping up. I mean, this story where, because it's about the Iraqi victims of torture, debriefed in Jordan, the NYT will use the word "torture" as plain English has it, because it would not offend their sources in the Bush-Cheney administration. But then … the article reveals American torture. Money quote:

The torturers, clients say, have included the Iraqi Army, American forces, Saddam Hussein’s henchmen, Al Qaeda in Iraq, and the sectarian groups, gangs and militias that continue to terrorize parts of Iraq. Some clients report having been tortured by more than one of these groups. Many clients still fear for their safety, so the treatment center omits victims’ names from its records and uses a code instead.

My italics. And this story has details of what US forces did:

The Daily Wrap

Today on the Dish, Andrew came to the defense of the monarchy in all its human frailty, the people wanted wedding coverage, and the bloggers admitted we all have our guilty pleasures. Cowen sized up the success of austerity, Andrew tried to nail down the mainstream media's role in gatekeeping stories, and responded to Weigel's … Continue reading The Daily Wrap

Dissents Of The Day II

A reader writes:

The participants of the Hunky Jesus contest aren't having a Mohammad contest on Easter because most of them grew up Christian, in a Christian-majority country. So your whole "Why don't you do this to Muslims?" thing is ridiculous.  Making light of our own experiences with oppression is cathartic, and obviously funny to some, since the Sisters Of Perpetual Indulgence have been doing this for 30 years, raising awareness and money for HIV/AIDS. I'm a Christian who sees kids – some of them Christian! – having a good time. (Also, a lot of these people are straight, so "some homosexuals" should be "some people.")

Thank god we've moved on from being afraid of our enemies to just living our lives – drugs, sex, offensive jokes and all. I think the Sister said it best at the beginning, "Jesus has a sense of humor," and neither of us knows how hard he was laughing that day.

Another writes:

Get real, Andrew.  The only difference between the Hunky Jesus contest in San Francisco and South Park's depiction of Jesus lies in your own personal taste.

The View From Your Window Contest, Ctd

The reader who submitted this week’s window judges the finalists: I had a chuckle reading these. Rather eerily, three readers identified my flat and provided pictures. Two identified my bathroom window. Unfortunately, my wine bottles are aligned along the window sill in the kitchen. The winner is therefore the reader who submitted the picture below: … Continue reading The View From Your Window Contest, Ctd

The View From Your Window Contest: Winner #45

A reader writes: The scene has a “developing country” look and feel. That, and the mountainous terrain, and the flags (Nepal’s flag has the most unique shape in the world, two triangles one below the other) indicate that this is Nepal. I’ll just go with Kathmandu, the capital. Another writes: The first thing I thought … Continue reading The View From Your Window Contest: Winner #45

A Regular View From Your Airplane Window? Ctd

Mt. Everest Lots of great feedback from readers. One writes: I think it would be lovely to see the photos regularly because they tap into something you already, wisely, do with your blog. The Dish is primarily political, but every day you insist on “mental health breaks” – be it a schnoodle playing the piano or a … Continue reading A Regular View From Your Airplane Window? Ctd

The Daily Wrap

Today on the Dish, Andrew asked conservativism to consider raising income tax rates, and bemoaned the slim pickings for 2012 since the GOP has gone fringe. Newt feared a secular socialist Islamist America, Romney's phoniness trumped all, and the Tea Party still tilted towards unbearably white. Andrew and Dan Savage gave the Obamaites credit for … Continue reading The Daily Wrap

The View From Your Window Contest: Winner #40

A reader writes: Are you kidding? I don’t know how anyone could guess this location or deduce it from any observation of items in the photo, unless they know the spot already. I’ve been trying (and failing) to guess at these contests for months, but this one seems simply impossible. Another writes: I recognize that … Continue reading The View From Your Window Contest: Winner #40

What About Bad Principals? Ctd

Readers join Noah Millman and Kenny Powers in pushing the principals around. One writes:

While I am sympathetic to your argument about teacher accountability, it's also the case that most private sector positions are not very politicized, and most private sector managers are held accountable in more measurable ways than principals.  My own sense is that principals are more likely to display school board cronyism, self-protecting careerism, and pandering to parents than the average teacher.
