How Co-opted Is Fox News?

A glimpse:

An analysis by the Pew Institute’s Project for Excellence in Journalism found that, over the eight days ending July 15, CNN devoted 35 minutes of daytime coverage to the phone-hacking scandal; MSNBC spent 18 minutes on the story. Murdoch’s Fox News devoted just under 4 minutes.

The New York Post hasn't covered itself in glory either. Pat Kiernan also writes:

I’ve heard anecdotally that every News Corp. journalist fears the wrath of Murdoch.

Since I am only a free-lance columnist for Murdoch's Sunday flagship, The Sunday Times, I may not count. But I have written for his paper, the Sunday Times, for fifteen years, and can only say I have never felt the teensiest pressure to avoid writing what I think about News Corp. I have criticized its web strategy on its own website, I have written freely about the phone hacking affair here on my blog, and I have just filed a long piece on my return to Britain for Sunday's paper, which discusses Private Eye's gleeful gloating over the Murdoch crisis. I've never felt under the slightest pressure to toe any line. Sometimes self-censorship is worse than censorship. Sometimes, the boss doesn't really demand it.
