We can’t afford the same kind of caution when the future of our security is at stake. We know that the money that America spends on foreign oil is funding both sides of the war on terror; that it pays for everything from the madrassas that plant the seeds of terror in young minds to the Sunni insurgents that attack our troops in Iraq . We know this money corrupts budding democracies and allows dictators from hostile regimes to threaten the international community. It even presents a target for Osama bin Laden, who has told al Qaeda to, “focus your operations on oil, since this will cause [the Americans] to die off on their own.”

It’s never ends, does it? From the Boston Globe:

With metronomic regularity, the United States, for one, always seems to be losing its innocence – the Kennedy assassination, the urban disturbances of the sixties, Vietnam, the Church committee’s CIA revelations, Three Mile Island, the smoking cancer scandals, the John Lennon assassination, Iran Contra, the priest pedophile imbroglio, September 11, Abu Ghraib (to detail just one recent trill) — and yet Americans never seems to learn anything, repeatedly emerging as resolutely innocent (which is to say, unknowing) as they were before the latest brief seizure of lucidity.

Or is that the right way of thinking about things?

Maybe it’s why I love the place so much. We have so much in common. But the piece gets tougher after this.

He may be their best bet. George Allen just endorsed him. Kristol thinks he may be the best bet against a Christianist Ralph Nader. This was the rationale from the start – to rescue the fast-disintegrating Bush-Rove coalition with a hastily-drafted Foghorn Leghorn. I fear it’s too late. Scratch that: I hope it’s too late. One small reason to support Giuliani is that he would hasten the crack-up of the toxic Rove machine. Until that machine is dismantled, no revival of real, limited government conservatism is possible.

A Chris Kelly classic:

How strongly does Romney hate taxes? Last week, he not only signed a pledge to oppose all tax increases, he also snapped the pen in half, shattered the desk with a single blow, and made powerful animal love to Grover Norquist on the shards.

In the end, all that remained of Norquist and the desk was sawdust and an unjustified sense of entitlement.

I have a feeling this sentiment is more widespread than just one anecdote. At least I hope so:

The Discount Zone near my house is run by a bunch of guys who are from Egypt. A couple of weeks ago, I stopped in there and I didn’t receive my usual prompt, flirtatious service because three of them were behind the counter having some sort of serious conversation in Arabic. After a minute or two, one of them looked over and noticed me. I don’t know what got into me, but I said, "Dirka! Dirka! Mohammed Jihad!" They all laughed at the silliness, and one of them had seen "Team America, World Police," so he thought it was hilarious and explained to the others. More hilarity. Now, every time I go in there, one of them says, "Hey, Baby! Dirka! Dirka! Mohammed Jihad!"

This is an interesting finding – charting which candidate is the object of the most Googling. Green is Rudy, Red Obama, Blue Clinton and Yellow Ron Paul. Paul is last the in MSM, first in Google. One other tidbit: Hillary is also ahead of Obama in most places. But not in Iowa. Hmmm. Link here.
