“Black and Brown”

A reader writes:

Is there any way you can put a moratorium on the adjectives "brown" and "black?" As a first-generation American (and a Latino of Cuban/Spanish parentage), I find it a little annoying when I am described in columns and news reports (not just yours, I might add) as a "brown" voter.

Latinos are not all "brown." You have to admit–it’s a little reductionist, no? Honestly–I’m probably paler than you. A silly quibble, maybe, but it’s something that really bugs. I didn’t appreciate Hillary making reference to "brown/black" during the debate (Obama uses the terms AA and Latino, I believe). I find it patronizing.

Clintonlash

Bob Reich adds his voice to the chorus:

It’s not fair – indeed, it’s demeaning – for a former President to say things that are patently untrue (such as Obama’s anti-war position is a “fairy tale”) or to insinuate that Obama is injecting race into the race when the former President is himself doing it.

The Clintons appear to have removed the most egregiously deceptive radio ad from the air.
