He’d be tagged as an "elitist" by now. But the real problem with his gas price gaffe is how easy it would have been for him to have avoided it. I mean, I don’t drive at all, but I sure know that gas is now over $4 a gallon. Doesn’t McCain?
Update: I misread the quote. It’s the following:
WICKSOL: When was the last time you pumped your own gas and how much did it cost?
MCCAIN: Oh, I don’t remember. Now there’s Secret Service protection. But I’ve done it for many, many years. I don’t recall and frankly, I don’t see how it matters.
He was being asked how much it used to cost. So his answer isn’t so dumb – just the prickly attitude to the populist question.
