Tonight, we tell America: we know the past, we know we did wrong. My bad. But we go forward in appreciation of the values that brought us to this point.
Well, yes. But it is equally true that the moment for that kind of introspection was years ago, when the GOP and conservative establishment were busy demonizing heretics like yours truly or Bruce Bartlett for saying the same thing. And the liberal political and economic reality teed up by Bush and now seized by Obama will reshape America so profoundly that no future conservatism will be imaginable without seeing the new terrain.
Maybe that’s just as well. This is the liberals’ moment now. And they will rise or fall on how they meet the occasion.
