The Case For Modesty In Afghanistan, Ctd

Exum goes another round:

Where I think Justin and the rest of the [Afghanistan Study Group (ASG)] get things wrong is when he says that our interests [in Afghanistan] are "reasonably easy to achieve." This gets back to the main point I made in (constructively, I thought) criticizing the ASG: the lack of actual knowledge of Afghanistan and the current environment there within the ASG contributes to a drastic underestimation of the difficulty we would have securing our interests through their proposed strategy. (They might also, as one friend pointed out, similarly overestimate the costs of the status quo.) So again, I applaud the efforts of the ASG, but they would have perhaps been better off drafting this guy or this guy — neither of them "counterinsurgency enthusiasts," as Steven Walt has taken to calling me — into their team to help them sort through how they might operationalize an alternative strategy in a way that makes sense in Afghanistan's local context.

Drug War Madness

This time in Texas:

Administrators at Byron Nelson High School in Trophy Club suspended a 16-year-old boy on Tuesday because his eyes were bloodshot and they thought he might have been smoking marijuana. The teen said he was not high. Instead his eyes were red because he had been grieving the loss of his murdered father. Kyler Robertson’s father was stabbed to death on Sunday. His mother honored his wishes and let him go to school on Tuesday to be with his friends.

After administrators learned of the situation they still barred him from school before taking a drug test (he passed – as if that really matters in this case). Scott Morgan is gobsmacked.

Gay Sex = Terrorism

The Dish has tried to ignore Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association for some time, since his Malkin-esque rants are as predictable as they are putrid.  But his latest bile seems unprecedented:

You've got these Mujaheddin on the battlefield setting out these syringes with the HIV virus in it as a way to carry out terrorism. This is exactly what happens when two males have sex with one another. If one of them is HIV Positive, then it's just like injecting his partner with a needle with HIV. That's domestic terrorism. I don't know what else you'd call it.

Why is this even relevant? Because Fischer is planning to share a platform at the Values Voter Summit with the likes of Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Mike Pence, Bob McDonnell, Newt Gingrich, Michele Bachmann – and now Christine O'Donnell.

The Palin Model, Ctd

Straight from the mama grizzly's mouth:

[O'Donnell]’s going to have to learn very quickly to dismiss what some of her handlers want. Remember what happened to me in the VP. […] So she’s going to have to learn that, yes, very quickly. She’s going to have to dismiss that, go with her gut, get out there, speak to the American people. Speak through FOX News and let the Independents who are tuning in to you, let them know what it is that she stands for, the principles behind her positions.

Craig’s Blacklist, Ctd

Emboldened by their victory over Craigslist, anti-prostitution advocates are using congressional hearings to target a landmark law. Ryan Singel sounds the alarm over their "assault on the open internet itself":

The open internet [Google, Facebook, Yelp, etc.] owes Craigslist a thank-you for fighting as long as it did, an apology for not coming to its aid, and some serious arm-linking starting now.

Be Careful Who You Trust

The founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, once had the following exchange via instant message:

ZUCK: yea so if you ever need info about anyone at harvard
ZUCK: just ask
ZUCK: i have over 4000 emails, pictures, addresses, sns
FRIEND: what!? how'd you manage that one?
ZUCK: people just submitted it

Boing Boing has more.
