A cook must win here to compete at the Jack Daniel’s Invitational in Lynchburg, Tennessee, in October—the de facto World Series of barbecue—so Blue Ridge draws a mixture of local teams and national pros. Everyone competes for the $20,000 cash prize and a spot at “the Jack”, or at least “backyard bragging rights”. Only a few of this year’s competitors make a living off barbecue, and even fewer have managed to make it to “the Jack”.
