Family Values

Four years ago, Ruth Bell Graham’s evangelist husband, Billy, and evangelist son, Franklin, refused to let her be buried where she wanted, insisting instead that she be interred on the grounds of the Billy Graham Library, a site that she considered a “tourist attraction” and “circus.”   Now another aging evangelical leader, Robert Schuller of the Crystal Cathedral, has been kicked in the teeth by his own thankless child – who, among other things, has made the church less welcoming to gays than it was under his stewardship:

Coleman also required choir members to sign a covenant acknowledging Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and the belief that marriage should be between a man and a woman.  The older Schuller publicly lashed out at the contract saying everyone is welcome in the church. Phillip Johnson, the architect who constructed the cathedral's iconic glass sanctuary, was an openly gay man.
