Today, of the more than 581,000 gay couples living in the United States, 28% are in legally recognized marriage or state equivalent relationships. Approximately 9%, or 50,000, of those couples have married in the United States, and up to 5% have married internationally. An additional 15% of U.S. gay couples are in legally recognized civil unions.
