Alison Nastasi is struck by Ashkan Honarvar's series Faces 5:
Using photos of First World War soldiers who suffered extreme facial injuries, the artist recreated their images — aiming to address issues of identity and the lasting psychological effects of combat — using rainbow-colored candy and gooey ice cream. The bizarre, startling portraits of men slathered in sprinkles, frosting, and jellybeans — which have been transformed into mutilated, visceral wounds — are a sight to behold.
