“The Fact Is, I’m Gay.” Ctd

A reader writes:

Thank you for sharing your letter from Anderson Cooper.  I am proudly the mom of a gay son who wants also to be a journalist and hopefully a foreign correspondent.  I have never written to anyone before, but I finally feel that I should after a very long discussion with my son over the importance of people coming out and how it does help to make being gay acceptable.  I hate having to even verbalize that.  Thank Mr Cooper, because I have felt for a very long time that my heart would break if my son wasn't allowed to love and be loved.  It is truly one of the greatest gifts God has given all mankind.

Another reader:

What a beautiful piece of writing. Thank you for sharing. It is so long past the time that we should consider anyone's sexuality as public property, but keeping secrets isn't the best approach either. I think he made the best possible compromise between the two.

One more:

You've asked us to keep telling you when you're doing it right or wrong. I wanted to say I think you're doing it right today. Anderson's story is important, but what's more important to us all in the long run is the kind of analysis you can provide about the Roberts Court and the American Conservative movement. Most news outlets have run the story and come to the conclusion that being a gay celebrity isn't as big of a deal anymore, but they have managed to spend hours on the story anyway. You managed to highlight how it does matter, respected Anderson's mantra of news never being about the reporter, and segued to other stories of the day – instead of running reams of reax and basking in how you won the news cycle. I credit you, your team, your audience, and the understanding shared between the three parties.
