A reader sends in this translation of Newt Gingrich's latest blather:

"I think the Democratic leadership has to take some moral responsibility for having behaved with such arrogance skill, in such a hostile successful way, that the around 22% of the American people are deeply upset. So let’s be honest with this. This is a game that they’re playing, and they’ve just won an inning. People should not engage in personal threats. I’m happy to condemn any effort to engage in personal threats. Don’t let my righteously indignant call to anger, you know, anger you. I think the Democratic leadership has to take some real responsibility for having run a machine that used well-worn Congressional tactics to win corrupt tactics, that bought votes, that bullied people, and as a result has enraged about a fifth much of the American people. And I think it’d be nice for President Obama, Speaker Pelosi, and Majority Leader Reid to take some responsibility for keeping their campaign promises to the equally “American” remainder of the people of the people of over what their actions have done to this country,"

"Even if Coakley wins – and my guess is she'll lose by a double digit margin – the bill is dead. The most Obama can hope for is a minimalist alternative that simply mandates that insurance companies accept people with pre-existing conditions and are barred from ejecting patients when they feel like it. That's all he can get now – and even that will be a stretch," – Andrew Sullivan, January 18.

Yep, I changed my mind after my initial panic. But I deserve the whack.

"Media requests to deal with this subject make it difficult to provide an adequate response to today's article by Laurie Goodstein. But the time has come to ask some serious questions about why the Times is working overtime with wholly discredited lawyers to uncover dirt in the Catholic Church that occurred a half-century ago. Those questions will be raised in an ad I am writing that will be published in next Tuesday's New York Times; a rejoinder to the article will also be made. All I can say now is that this is the last straw," – Bill Donohue, digging in to defend a church that became a criminal conspiracy to protect and enable child rapists.

"[T]he lunatic Jews who insist that a Jew must live anywhere a Jew ever lived do not see that they, too, are re-opening 1948 and the legitimacy of what it established. Why does the Israeli government allow the argument for a unified Jerusalem to be mistaken for the heartless revanchism of these settlers? Whatever arrangements about Jerusalem are eventually made in a peace agreement, and I no longer expect to see one in my lifetime, Jerusalem will remain both the capital of Israel and a demographically mottled city. It makes no sense to show contempt for the people with whom you are destined to live. It is not only cruel, it is stupid. So the dispossession of the El Ghawis is a disgrace. And a Jewish disgrace, because it was Simon the Just, the legendary leader buried in an ancient cave not far from the El Ghawis’ house, who famously taught that one of the things which supports the world in existence is the practice of kindness," – Leon Wieseltier.

"With politicians now having not only access to our most confidential records, and having the power of granting or withholding medical care needed to sustain ourselves or our loved ones, how many people will be bold enough to criticize our public servants, who will in fact have become our public masters?" – Thomas Sowell, Real Clear Politics.
