Some 140 Kikuyu families sought refuge from ethnic post-election violence at the monastery and have had members of the Kalenji tribe attack them in the periphery of the monastery on several occasions. More than 850 people have been killed, according to an AFP tally of police and hospital figures, since the disputed December 27 election touched off a wave of deadly rioting and ethnic killings.
