What’s Wrong With Publishing

Andrew Wylie (full disclosure: my agent for 20 years) , tells it like it is:

"The key point in the business is that the investment is made in the wrong areas in the business, and I think that quality — which is more valuable over time — has been undervalued, and quantity — which is less valuable over time — has been overvalued. And I think this is a reaction to the dominance of the influence of the chains. In England right now, this is a catastrophe. The retail side is leading the business by the nose, and publishers have not reacted with sufficient strength, and they should have. And so the business in England is just in the tank basically."

Hitch On Huck

Oh, snap:

What Article VI does not do, and was never intended to do, is deny me the right to say, as loudly as I may choose, that I will on no account vote for a smirking hick like Mike Huckabee, who is an unusually stupid primate but who does not have the elementary intelligence to recognize the fact that this is what he is. My right to say and believe that is already guaranteed to me by the First Amendment. And the right of Huckabee to win the election and fill the White House with morons like himself is unaffected by my expression of an opinion.

“Get Lost, Greenpeace”

A rant against environmentalists with some teeth:

Does it ever even cross their minds that they may be fallible, like other humans?

It certainly doesn’t cross their lips. Not an iota of self-doubt infects the pronunciamentos of their spokesmen. Do they ever say should when they can say must? Shoppers must (plastic bags and food-miles), drivers must (gas-guzzlers, any cars of almost any sort), airline passengers must (stay on the ground), electricity-users must (switch off), and, of course and endlessly, governments must.
