Face Of The Day

Dennis Choban looks up while he holds a sign while supporters and opponents of marriage equality protest March 4, 2008 in San Francisco, California. The California Supreme Court heard challenges to the law defining marriage as the union between a man and a woman and heard challenges to the law from four lawsuits, three filed by nearly two dozen same sex couples and the fourth by the city of San Francisco. A decision is expected by the California Supreme Court in 90 days. By David Paul Morris/Getty Images.

Democracy In Action

A reader writes:

I know that the poll results are currently running 60-40 against comments. But, you haven’t let Ohio, Texas, and Rhode Island weigh in on this issue yet.

Moreover, some of those poll result "Nos" came from states like Utah, Idaho, and Montana — states that don’t count. Some of the "Nos" came from Louisiana, Georgia, and South Carolina where there are lots of African-Americans so that was not fair. Plus, I heard that Jesse Jackson, Louis Farrakhan, and Osama bin Laden also voted "No."

On top of it, the Yes" votes have won in California, New York, New Jersey, and Arkansas — states that really matter.

It’s 3am — don’t you trust the "Yes" to keep you safe?

Mini-Piggies!

Is this the pet of the future? I hope so. Pigs are extremely intelligent, as emotionally evolved as dogs, and our society’s brutal treatment of them in hog farms is, quite simply, indefensible. I know: I still eat bacon. And I shouldn’t. But the key to protecting these creatures, and improving their treatment, is seeing them as Churchill did. Maybe breeding them into cute pets will help. We’d never treat dogs the way we treat hogs.

The Looming Spin War

Crowley is surely right: what will matter this week, more than the results tonight, will be the attempt to frame them in the coming days. The Clintons will have their work cut out:

I assume we’re going to see a ferocious push by the Obama campaign to create a climate of opinion that demands Hillary’s exit. This hint that he’s about to unveil 50 more superdelegate endorsements is a preview. So is the fact that Obama has waited to release his February fundraising haul, which is expected to top an astonishing $50 million. Party leaders and liberal pundits are going to start hammering on Hillary to get out.

What’s not clear to me is whether her campaign has a persuasive counter argument.

In a strange way, the recent Clinton boomlet could backfire. If she fails to meet expectations, the math – and the interests of the Democrats as a whole – could crush her.
