Yglesias Award Nominee

"The real story of the night, when you look at their rallies and their turn-out numbers, is that the Dems have two strong candidates either of whom could lead a united party to victory. Forget the gaseous platitudes: in Dem terms, their choice on Super Duper Tuesday was deciding which candidate was Super Duper and which was merely Super. Over on the GOP side, it was a choice between Weak & Divisive or Weaker & Unacceptable. Doesn’t bode well for November," – Mark Steyn.

Haggard Leaves The Program

It seems he couldn’t be heterosexualized – and has quit the re-programming "therapy". I hope Haggard will at some point reflect on all this, and perhaps emerge as a figure able to talk about sexual orientation with evangelicals and persuade some that it truly is an integral part of someone’s psyche and soul. The issue of homosexuality is tearing churches apart and alienating the next generation from the core message of the Gospels. I see no reason why Haggard could not turn his life around and help heal this wound. I’m probably being way too naive. But maybe it is his mission. God works in mysterious ways.

The $5 Million Question

Was that $5 million included in her January total of $13 million? In which case, her fundraising has all but collapsed in comparison with Obama’s. And whence exactly did that $5 million come from? Her book royalties? Or did her husband bankroll it? Or was it drawn from tabloid plutocrat Ron Burkle’s $20 million fork-over to Bill? These are all tantalizing questions. Maybe someone in the press will demand an answer.

The Great Indoors

Americans are doing less and less rambling and walking and camping in the wild:

Fishing peaked in 1981 and had declined 25 percent by 2005, the researchers found. Visits to national parks peaked in 1987 and dropped 23 percent by 2006, while hiking on the Appalachian Trial peaked in 2000 and was down 18 percent by 2005.

Blame it on Guitar Hero.

Timing And The Campaign

There are reasons for Obama to be optimistic. The next stretch could provide an opportunity for him to introduce himself to more voters. The more people see of him, the more they like him. The fact that he survived Super Tuesday – which benefits the huge brand-name of "Clinton" in a national primary – and actually won the delegate battle is impressive enough. But now, the retail politics and more and more media exposure and more and more money give him an edge. VandeHei and Allen:

Obama also runs tremendously well in states with large African-American populations, another promising sign since next Tuesday’s three primaries are in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia — all of which have significant percentages of black voters.

Then comes another caucus state, Hawaii, where Obama is viewed as a native son.

The bottom line is that it figures to be another month before Clinton hits a stretch of states — places like Ohio and Pennsylvania — where she will be strongly favored to win.
